Description:
In the first chapter of "Kilroy Was Here", Kelly L. Swann illustrates the impetus of Kilroy being adopted into the armed forces. The black and white comic opens with a puppy knocking over a bowl of food off of the dining table. In the next page, the home is bombed, caught in the crossfire of the war. The dog survives and wanders off to the sound of soldiers in the distance. Soon after, the dog cuddles up to an injured soldier who names the dog Kilroy, after a cartoon drawing popular amongst WWII G.I.'s. Kilroy and the soldier are later rescued and transported to the main base where Kilroy is handed off to Jo, a war nurse. "'Kilroy Was Here' spans the year between the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943 to the breakout from the Anzio beachhead in 1944. The narration follows the puppy, who meets a different person each chapter. In this way, we get a view of different people from different countries during the second world war…"
