Description:

Bert Holm, a handsome, courageous, and plain-spoken American, becomes a celebrity by climbing the world's highest mountain. He is soon swept up in the adulation and it becomes central to his identity. The character in the novel is based somewhat on Charles Lindbergh whom Buck met in China and disliked, though she is more critical in the novel of those who took advantage of Bert's fame.
