Description:

In view of the huge increase in car ownership and car travel in the UK during the 1960s, Lady Sharp (as she then was) was commissioned by the then Minister of Transport to estimate how many engineers would be needed to perform the requisite transport planning. Her report gave estimates and also estimates of how many university places would be needed to train these engineers. The report is still of interest today because it states clearly that transport planning and land-use planning should be performed conjointly by a single department as an ongoing activity. Governments then and now seem unable to implement this recommendation.
