Description:

This is a history of the Northland Police District covering the area from Kaiwaka to Cape Reinga from the beginning of European settlement up to 1986. In this year the N.Z. Police celebrated 100 years of existence as a civilian law enforcement body. The first police to work in New Zealand were a Sergeant and four mounted troopers from the N.S.W. Mounted Police who accompanied Captain William Hobson in H.M.S. Herald arriving at Waitangi on 29 Jan.1840.
