Description:
It is a readable and accurate biography of the Priest (Cura) of Taos, based on primary sources, especially the 1877 Spanish (unpublished) manuscript Biografia del Presbitero Antonio Jose Martinez, Cura de Taos by Santiago Valdez. This work is located at the Huntingon Library (Ritch Collection) in San Marino, near Los Angeles. RELUCTANT DAWN fairly relates the accomplishments of Padre Martinez and the controversies that marked his facinating life. His peers in the U.S. Territoria Assembly, upon his death inh 1867, called him the "Honor of His Homeland," yet the last decade of his life was shadowed by ecclesiastical censure.
