Research into Soviet system in historiography over the last decades is related to a few key topic. Attention is given to the erosion of the Soviet system evidenced in the Brezhnev period, and the collapse of the Soviet system is also related with ethnic processes originating in the Soviet system, which are often discussed analyzing the development of the Soviet Lithuania. In this context, describing the Soviet Lithuanian government becomes very complicated: it is often displayed as an active defendant of the Soviet system, indifferent to the changing of the regime, moreover that the regime itself ensured its power, acknowledgement and privileges. Such arguments were used by sociology researchers who represent the totalitarian approach, and the approach like this dominates Lithuanian historiography.
