Description:
This book represents the first comprehensive treatment of the relationship between the European Union and the main Nordic countries - Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Its authors, many of whom are notable academics from the countries under discussion, highlight some of the burning questions and problems which faced these countries during their moves towards closer ties with the EU, or in some cases towards EU membership. In particular they look at the recent accession of Sweden and Finland to the Union and the effect that this will have on both the EU and on the internal politics of the region, and they discuss the possibility of complete Nordic EU membership. The national considerations of each country in the region in dealing with the evolving European Union are considered and the authors also provide an analysis of the ramifications of wider Nordic EU membership for a number of key policy areaseconomic and monetary union, social and environmental policy, agriculture and fisheries and foreign and security affairs.
