Historical novel set in Thebes, Greece, in 335 B.C. Second in the Alexander the Great series, following *A Murder in Macedon*. Believing Alexander has been killed in Thessaly, the Thebans besiege the Macedonian garrison. Returning, Alexander defeats them and destroys the city. A mystery surrounds the death of the garrison commander and Alexander asks his friend, the Israelite Miriam Bartimaeus, to investigate and to uncover the identity of a spy.
