"The centers of many metropolises worldwide offer an image that is less than inviting, with forbidding office building facades, permanently congested main traffic arteries and a high level of pollution. The city of Johannesburg, the economic hub of South Africa, ran a daring experiment which showed alternative possibilities: as part of the EcoMobility World Festival, a hundred thousand commuters converted to ecomobility--for four weeks, private cars were replaced by public transport, bicycles and pedestrian traffic in the Sandton business district.
