"The present volume is a collection of communications drawn from two study days held at Maison de l'Orient et de la Méditerranée. The first day, in January 2006, was dedicated to the fronts of scene buildings. The second, held in January 2007, was dedicated to sanctuaries in theatres. Organised within the programme of the Institute for Research on Ancient Architecture entitled "Theatres and sanctuaries", the two study days provided an opportunity for a group of researchers, through monographs and synthetic studies, to investigate two of the most striking traits of the antique theatre: the ornamentation of the facade in front of which plays were performed, and the integration of theatrical performances into religious practices"--
