Within 75 years, the Bay of Islands was to become a focal point in the Pacific for trade and industry, as well as for every sort of commercial chicanery, land-jobbing and general lawlessness. Subject to a curious experiment in civil government and intensive missionary enterprise, within a short time these events would lead to open war, eventually eroding and destroying the ancient pattern of life of the proud people Cook had originally found there"--Introduction.
