Description:

No one would have believed: Alvim Corrêa and 10 Contemporary Artistsʺ: the exhibition takes as its title the first words of the novel The War of the Worlds, by H. G. Wells, at a time when the whole world experiences a situation that seems to be taken from science fiction books: a pandemic. From the shock and confrontation of this unexpected scenario, the exhibition proposes a reflection on the imagery legacy of the Brazilian artist Alvim Corrêa (1876-1910), known for his illustrations for Wellsœ novel, our current moment and its challenges: past and present colonialism; war and destruction; science and fiction; the existence on and off planet Earth; human life and its connection with the non-human; the seemingly inextricable relationship between violence, fear and desire. In addition to presenting an expressive set of works by Alvim Corrêa, the exhibition promotes a dialogue with ten contemporary artists: Alex Cervený, Cabelo, Denilson Baniwa, Fernando Gutiérrez Huanchaco, Guerreiro do Divino Amor, Ilê Sartuzi, Luiz Roque, Rivane Neuenschwander, Runo Lagomarsino, and Wendy Morris; they all help us to think about the complexity of Corrêaœs views and their relevance today.
