Description:

The concepts of 'writing' and 'reading' differed in many ways in Old Icelandic. There were different languages, writing systems, materials, types of text, voices and frames. The people involved acted as writers, authors, readers, listeners or clients. In contrast, there are various verbs such as rita, rísta, skrifa, dikta, setja saman, lesa or sjá, which refer to specific aspects. It is therefore essential to know these concepts in order to research medieval literacy. Nevertheless, so far there have only been isolated analyzes of individual aspects, lexemes, texts and passages. The present work examines the vocabulary for the first time in a larger text corpus, which comprises three central source texts for the medieval Icelandic writing culture. The concepts are analyzed with the help of the syntagmatic relations, which map the semantic structures on the expression side. This enables a systematic consideration of the concepts and various aspects of medieval Icelandic writing.
