Gruuthuyse Castle, probably the oldest castle site in Oostkamp, has long required a more in-depth study. However, this research starts with a serious handicap. In 1981 a major fire destroyed the entire roof and part of the interior of this prestigious Neo-Renaissance style castle. A lot of historical material is also lost. Nevertheless, the authors manage to bring together a lot of new information. The book tells the extensive history of the noble residence on the Rivierbeek and from the early habitation in the brook valley to the current state of the protected domain. Attention is paid to the old fief of Ten Torre, the manor of Oostkamp, the successive owners including the Bruges lords of Gruuthuse, the extension of the estate, the 19th century castle with an exceptional park, the link with Oostkamp village life and the ultimate fragmentation of the estate Kasteel Gruuthuyse, waarschijnlijk de oudste kasteelsite in Oostkamp, vraagt reeds geruime tijd om een meer diepgaande studie. Dit onderzoek start echter met een serieuze handicap. In 1981 vernielt een grote brand het volledig dak en een deel van het interieur van dit prestigieuze kasteel in neorenaissancestijl. Daarbij gaat ook heel wat historisch materiaal verloren. Toch slagen de auteurs erin om heel wat nieuwe informatie samen te brengen. Het boek brengt de uitgebreide geschiedenis van de adellijke residentie aan de Rivierbeek en van de vroege bewoning in het beekdal tot de actuele toestand van het beschermde domein. Er is aandacht voor het oude leengoed Ten Torre, de heerlijkheid Oostkamp, de opeenvolgende eigenaars waaronder de Brugse heren van Gruuthuse, de uitbouw van het landgoed, het 19de eeuwse kasteel met een uitzonderlijk park, de band met het Oostkampse dorpsleven en de uiteindelijke versnippering van het landgoed
