Description:

New York City was the last leg of the visit by the "Japanese Embassy" an American name for the offical delegation from Japan that brought a Treaty of Amity and Commerce to the United States for ratification in 1860. This exhibition includes materials related to the two-week celebration that included parades, balls, and official tours in NYC. The delegation consisted of two principal ambassadors, a Special Censor, and 16 lessor officials--all of them samurai (members of Japan's military nobility).
