Description:
This is a sentimental tour of England made by automobile during the 1920's. The author was a journalist who had served as an officer during the First World War. The book focuses on rural England, on narrow back lanes and sleepy villages where the traveller can find glimpses of the last of old England which had been wiped away by the cataclysm of the First World War. Morton's ability to capture the people he meets in a few lines is legendary. He is also curious about English history, as experienced through buildings and heritage sites surviving at the time. "In Search of England" is only one of a long list of best-seller travel books by Morton, but it is probably his most famous.
