Description:

Anna Graham wants only to be the greatest actress of her day. Her star, though, is not rising fast. With slim hope Anna's acting coach has prescribed self-erasure, but her vibrant, edgy, neurotic and maybe a bit obsessive personality keeps getting in the way. Then, at 3:30 one morning, on a nearly deserted subway platform in the heart of New York City, with a wand, a cigarette, and a can of red pepper spray she leaps to rescue a complete stranger, Damon Wetly, from a pair of murderous muggers. And in that brave, selfless moment Anna unwittingly alters the course of her own destiny. Not that Anna could possibly have predicted the misguided height and monstrous depths of the mysterious cloud-maker Damon Wetly's gratitude: that he would flout her will, defy the law, chance the loss of her love and sacrifice his own simply to make her dream come true. Nor could she have suspected the dark secrets of a paraplegic actor who has scaled the upper reaches of soap-opera superstardom in The Bold and Beautiful in the role of Stem. Or have foreseen intimate lunches and confessionals with the dazzling fashion megamodel and cult goddess Chriskate Turschicraw; or have anticipated the blandishments of the cellist, stripper, etiquette expert, and Weight Watchers counselor Nathaniel Powers, a man with always one more profession up his sleeve.
