Description:

Contains over 16,680 liturgical titles printed in Europe between 1450 and 1600 is designed for musicologists studying organ and choral music, art historians searching for named engravers and artists, general historians studying aristocratic patronage, scholars of poetry, and specialists in church history and early printed books. The database can be searched in the following ways: printing year or range of years; name of printer; city of printer; book classification (missal, breviary, gradual, etc.); country of probable use; intended users (rite, diocese, order, Church, monastery or court); library presently owning exemplar(s); amount of music (mostly, some, or no music); translator, editor, engraver or artist; language, if part or all of the text is other than Latin; the presence or absence of manuscript addenda; the presence or absence of illustrations; format (in quarto, octavo, etc.). Boolean operators enable searching and sorting on any combination of the above fields, and strings within fields can also be searched. Manuscripts and theological treatises are not included in the database. Books of printed polyphony that are listed in RISM (Repertoire international des sources musicales) are also not included. However, some polyphonic sources not listed in RISM are included. Printed books for Protestant liturgies are excluded if they are identified as such.
