Description:

Describes the meaning of story telling as a way of recording the history of the tribe. Unlike the Crow, the Sioux told their stories at any time, whenever the teller was in the mood to relate one and often just for pleasure with no underlying effort of making the children learn something from them. The story of Crow Butte recounts the narrow escape of a Crow horse raiding party by using a horse hide rope to descend the impassable backside of the Butte. Also has a story how the Sioux got their first horse - the Holy Dog. T.
