Some of these grants were made by the U.S. Government to pay off debts to officers and soldiers who served in the Revolutionary War; some of the grants was land owned and sold by Lord Granville; while other grants were issued by the states of North Carolina and Tennessee to encourage settlement in the new state of Tennessee.
