Both William F. Hughes and Eber W. Gaylord were professors of mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. The book was designed to be a concise compendium of 1,400 basic equations in continuum mechanics that would supplement any text in Fluid Mechanics, Elasticity, Electromagnetic Theory, or Dynamics.
