Description:
**Chasing Venus** explores one young girl's experiences running away from a home in turmoil, and toward something she knows is missing inside. It's a story about a mixed-race Native American Indian teen named Kasey Watson. The setting is mid 1970s on Long Island, New York. Being mixed anything was not socially accepted. Being Native American was not "cool," as it may seem today. Kasey struggles with abuse, alcoholism, drugs, and constant confusion -- then slips into depression. She longs to feel part of something larger than pain, hopelessness, and anxiety. This is a coming of age story -- which incorporates the subcultures of Deadheads, Native Americans, and the music and pop culture of that era. Kasey receives reassurance and companionship from the Morning Star, Venus. Her Cherokee grandfather reminds her to "Rise above your raising."
