Description:
"This title was first published in 2000. Yogyakarta Special Region (known as Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta in Bahasa Indonesia, or DIY) is located in the centre of the southern coast of Java. The region has a very long history and has undergone many changes and developments in agriculture, irrigation, population and immigration movements. Organized into four main sections, this text aims to provide a study of rural-urban integeration in the area, with particular reference to the consequences of development and employment. It introduces the region in geographical and economic terms, looking at the communities where fieldwork has been conducted. The results of these field studies are then presented, along with possible regional development policies geared towards encouraging the regional integration process. The important questions and implications of increasing rural-urban linkages for urban and societal changes in monsoon Asia are then reviewed on the basis of the lessons learned from the case studies in the DIY. Special attention is given to the consequences for employment and metropolitan changes in the wake of the changes taking place in this region."--Provided by publisher.
